What is innovative approach? According to Wikipedia, innovative is defined as the act of introducing something new or the process of making improvements by introducing something new, whereas approach in Kamus Dewan (1998) means method that is taken to start or to accomplish a duty such as to overcome problem. On the other hand, innovative approach means to change strategies, techniques, materials when better ones are found or when existing ones no longer provide a substantive learning experience for his/her students. It also has been defined as values and uses students' ideas about how to enhance their own learning. In other words, I can say that innovative approach is improved methods of teaching used by teachers in order to provide an effective teaching and learning process in the classroom.
As all we know, an effective teaching and learning process involves two way communications – teacher and students. However, a teacher will play vital role in a classroom. He/she will determine the effectiveness and success of a teaching and learning process in the class. So, who is the teacher? A teacher is an individual who teach or educate people. In formal educational context, a teacher is known as an individual who teach in formal way at school, college or university level.
There are some characteristics of effective teacher:
- Learner - role as "teacher-student"
- Leader who can inspire and influence students
- Provocateur who probes, prods, asks incessant why questions etc.
- Comedian/entertainer- uses humor in the service.
- Coach or guide students to improve on their skills.
- Genuine human being or humanist who is able to laugh at herself and the absurdity in the world
- Sentinel who provides an environment of intellectual safety.
- Optimist or idealist who believes that without an ideal or mission, there will be no approximation.
- One with others, collaborator who places a high value on collegiality.
- Revolutionary - with the exception of parenthood, most vital one on earth in the preservation of the sanctity of life.
What else do we need to know to be effective teacher?
Moving on is teacher-student interactions. Interaction means communication, relations. Teacher-student interaction means the way the teachers react to students and vice versa. There is some factors influence the teacher-student interaction which are gender, academic composition, and teacher’s communication style.
Factors of reducing the amount of interaction in the class are as follows:
- Repeated questions,
- Low language proficiency, and
- Limiting the class to the textbook
Nevertheless, factors enhancing the amount of interaction are:
- Interesting topics,
- Teacher's attention and humor.
- Creative.
- Unbiased in approaching students.
- Enjoy being a teacher.
- Motivate students.
- Students centered approach.
How students must learn?
- Learning in group.
- Individual.
- Explores.
- Learning through exercises.
- Learning from notes given.
All in all, teachers should change their mentality from exam oriented teaching style to comprehend teaching. Indeed, teachers must feel free to be creative with the support from school. All the best!
